Benefits of Participation:

  • Improve future care of breast cancer patients and survivors by identifying factors related to sleep disturbance and management.
  • $270 for completing study procedures (listed below).
  • Compensation for parking and food during visits to the Advanced Medicine Center at Stanford Hospital.
  • Free acupuncture treatments.
  • Mileage compensation if eligible.
  • Study Procedures:

  • Participate in 6 weeks of real or sham acupuncture (total of 12 sessions, 2/week) based on randomization.
  • Complete assessment questionaires at 4 time points: baseline, after 6th acupuncture session, after 12th acupuncture session, and at 1-month follow-up.
  • Complete daily sleep diaries.
  • Wear a watch-like device (Actiwatch 2) that measures light and activity for the duration of the study.
  • Provide a small amount of blood (3.5 tablespoons) and saliva samples at 3 time points: baseline, after 6th acupuncture session, and after 12th acupuncture session.
  • Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be 21 years old or older.
  • Must be a woman who have been diagnosed with primary or metastatic breast cancer.
  • Must have finished treatment 2 weeks or longer prior to screening, with the exception of hormonal treatment.
  • Able to understand spoken and written English.
  • Willingness to discontinue the current use of any sleep aids (prescription, over-the-counter, or naturopathic agents).
  • Able to travel to Stanford Hospital and vicinity for assessments and acupuncture treatments.
  • Must NOT be exposed to acupuncture within 6 months prior to screening.
  • Must NOT be currently pregnant or nursing.
  • Must NOT have had a major surgery within 4 weeks prior to first acupuncture treatment.
